Can I Use WD-40® On My Garage Door?

Garage door track repair

Lubrication is an important part of garage door maintenance, and the type of lubricant used is just as important as where it’s applied.

Garage door parts that aren’t properly lubricated can be noisy and wear down more quickly due to excessive friction. For professional garage door maintenance, call Precision 24/7 to schedule an appointment.

Is WD-40® Good for Garage Doors?

When it comes to maintaining your garage door, proper lubrication is essential for smooth operation, reduced noise, and long-lasting performance. However, many homeowners mistakenly reach for WD-40®, assuming it’s the best product for the job. While WD-40® is great for general cleaning and rust prevention, it’s not suitable as a garage door lubricant.

WD-40® displaces water and doesn’t offer the protective coating needed to prevent rust on high-use parts like springs and hinges. Without proper garage door lubrication, these parts are more likely to corrode, compromising the structural integrity of your door.

What to Use Instead

WD-40® might feel slippery right after you apply it, but it doesn’t last and quickly attracts dust and grime. Instead, silicone oil, grease, or spray are better options. They’re long-lasting, stable, and stay dry, so they won’t collect dirt.

Silicone spray is ideal for garage doors because it provides a thin, even coating that reduces friction and resists moisture. It’s especially great for rollers, hinges, and springs, as it won’t attract dust or dirt.

Lithium grease is thicker and more durable, making it perfect for metal components under heavy use. Apply it to the tracks, chains, and other high-pressure parts to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear.

Which Parts Need Lubrication?

Generally, any parts that experience friction when the door is in use need to be lubricated. This can include:

  • Hinges, which connect the sections of your garage door and allow it to bend as it opens and closes.
  • Rollers, which run along the tracks and help guide the door as it moves up and down.
  • The garage door tracks themselves may need lubrication as well.
  • Springs, which counterbalance the weight of the door, making it easier to lift.
  • Chain-drive openers will also need to have the garage door opener chain lubricated to prevent rust and wear.

The easiest way to ensure your garage door is properly lubricated is to call trained professionals who can service it safely and thoroughly.
